A Teachable Moment
Watching TV with my family, I wasn’t expecting to talk about self-image or evangelism though I was glad the opportunity was presented.
It started with my sweet, little five year old daughter making a degrading comment about someone on TV. I turned and told her that God made that person just like he had made her and he loves that person as well. We talked about being God’s children.
She asked how someone could be God’s child if they didn’t know God. Quite a thought for a five year old! I explained that they were made by God anyway, and that it’s our job to tell others about God so that they could know him.
We left it at that and I didn’t push anymore. It was quite enough for her age, I didn’t need to go into a sermon.
Just shows that as parents we need to be aware of and take advantage of those teachable moments God places before us. There’s probably been a lot more that I didn’t even notice but I will continue to keep my eyes open.
