Proud Mama of Caring Boys

Published by j9nicole at 1:57 pm under children, christian parenting, family Edit This

Before school today my first grade son made a birthday card for a boy in his class. This was not out of the ordinary. What I am proud of is the fact that he does not let differences affect his choice of friends. The boy he made a card for is a boy who is only in class occasionally because his main class is the special needs one.

Apparently, this boy had told my son, via his communicator (which my son thinks is great and loved how the boy used it to sing Happy Birthday to him on his birthday) that his birthday was today. My son has been reminding me of this just about everyday this week so that’s how he came to make a card.

This also reminded me of having a conversation with my nine year old recently about a boy at his school that the other boys wouldn’t play with at recess and how much this bothered him. He determinedly told me, one morning before school, that he was going to talk to his friends about how they treated the other boy and he was going to play with the boy himself.

Thinking scripturally not only are we encouraged to care for the least of these, Jesus also set an example by spending time with those others looked down on. Not that I am comparing kids in my children’s school to them, but maybe, in my children’s world, they are applying this by spending time with and caring for or just being friends with those who others may not. What’s even more exciting is when they do so without thinking about it. Hopefully I can follow their example.

So I am a very proud Mama.
